After
returning to the SS. 522
in the direction of Tropea,
you come to a left turning,
immediately after the "LA GRAZIA"
bridge, which leads to the port.
|
Following
the coast it then takes you to
other beaches, from which you
can admire the beauty of the
town with its houses perched on
the rock above the sea.
The beaches, all of which are
sandy to the sea-shore, offer
ample parking space.
You
then come to the ISOLA
cliff, upon the summit of which
rises a small and picturesque
church. One of the finest views
in the whole of the lower
Tyrrhenian area can be admired from
this point.
The festival in honour of the Madonna
dell'Isola, to whom the
church is dedicated, is
celebrated on the 15th of August,
when an evocative procession by
sea is organised, and on the 8th
of September when religious
services are held.
The church is of Basilian origin
with a facade that has been
altered many times throughout
the centuries and is now modern.
Beneath the cliff upon which the
church stands there is a large
area, partly private, offering
ample parking space to those who
wish to make use of the lidos
and enjoy the sandy beach.
Following the itinerary you come
to the
Marina del Convento
which has a predominantly sandy
beach. The cliffs known as the"Messaggi"
rise from the sea-shore, which
is partly composed by shingle.

In the
charming centre of Old Tropea, visitors can
admire the ancient buildings with their
granite doorways and the eleventh and
twelfth century Norman cathedral containing
the famous
Madonna di Romania, a
byzantine painting in wood that is much
loved by the inhabitants of Tropea. Just
behind the cathedral there is a panorama
spot with a splendid view of the hills
of Tropea, the coastline and Parghelia and
Zambrone in the distance.
The hill of St.Angelo, the site of
the Youth Hostel Villa Felice, offers a
wonderful view of the distant Aeolian
Islands and the vulcano Stromboli, as well
as the whole coastline between Zambrone and
the Riace point.
When the humid heat of the summer begins to
make itself felt there is nothing more
pleasant than enjoying the resfreshing
coolness that can be found beneath the trees
of its pine wood, far away from the bustling
noise of the summer resort.
The entire social centre, founded and
directed by Don Gerardo
Ruffa, is open to the public every day
from 9.00 to 12.00 and from 16.00 to 21.00.
Mass is celebrated daily at 10.00am.
On the outskirts of Tropea, in the
district of Carmine, you can find the
beautiful church of
Michelizia, with its history and
legends. You can also admire the sixteenth
century church of the SS. Annunziata,
with its coffered ceiling, on the road that
leads to Capo Vaticano.
